  • Alfalfa is a protein feed for livestock and offers the same benefit to organisms in the soil.
  • It contains ~17 percent crude protein, which translates into 2.75 percent nitrogen.
  • Alfalfa meal also contains fiber and other substrates that feed populations of soil organisms.
  • Application rates are usually ~10#/1000ft2.
  • Alfalfa is registered as a feed, not a fertilizer, but is ~3-2-2

Black Rock Phosphate - Greensand & Bone Char

A high carbon black rock phosphate, semi-fine, dustless, sand like texture.
Total phosphate is 30%.
Guaranteed available phosphate is 3%.
Can be used in broadcast spreaders.
Builds phosphate fertility where levels are low to increase rooting activity in transplants and sprouting seeds.
Also mineralizes the soil and improves quality of crops and soil structure.
Its' slow release allows plants to use it before it is fixed.

Bone Char is calcined (burned) bone meal which has until recently been used primarily for water purification and refining sugar. Bone Char 0-16-0 contains more than 16% available phosphate (P2O5) and 32% total phosphate. It is OMRI listed and can be applied without restriction on certified organic farmland. Bone Char 0-16-0 is currently less expensive than phosphate rock and significantly less is needed per acre to supply the same amount of available phosphate. The consistency of Bone Char 0-16-0 is fine, like table salt and its density is ~80 pounds per cubic foot.

General usage
Use to help plants adjust to transplant stress.
Phosphate rock cannot burn roots
.
Directions for use of Bone Char or Rock Phosphate
Apply 1-2 lbs per plant for tree or shrub transplants
(about a shovel load per sapling at transplant time).
To correct soil deficiencies, apply from 500-4,000 lbs per acre depending on severity of deficiencies.

Which one you choose will depend on your need and philosphy. Rock Phosphate contains less phosphate and releases more slowly than Bone Char and is a mined mineral. Bone Char contains much more available phosphate and releases more quickly than black rock phosphate. All these products are OMRI listed and can be used on certified organic farms and market gardens. Wholesale orders welcome.

Cottonseed meal will acidify soil at a value of 9# CaCO3 (calcium carbonate or pure lime) per 100#. >In other words, it takes 9# of lime to neutralize the acidity caused by 100# of Cottonseed Meal. See also Vegetable Protein Meals in the General Information Section. Cottonseed meal is a feed grade material. Apply about 5 lbs./100 ft.2 for planting beds.

Crab Shell (2.5-3-.5) Ca 23

A good fertilizer and substitute for bonemeal, due to it's high concentration of calcium, although it isn't so high in phosphorous. tomatoes enjoy a healthy dose of crab shell due to it's high calcium content. Indoor plants like Geraniums will like it as well. It breaks down very slowly and looks just like crushed up crab shells when you open the container. Will not burn the soil or harm plants in any way. No specific application rates are recommended for this product. Depending on need, you can apply between 500 and 2,000 lbs per acre. A soil test is the determinant for any fertilizer application however. 1 cup per 20 quarts of potting soil works for transplants and repotting house plants. Crab shell is also high in chitin, which promotes the growth of chitin eating bacteria. The exoskeletons of fungus and nematodes eggs, as well as the jaw structures of some garden pests like the japanese beetle grub are high in chitin. Crab shell, when added to the soil, helps create a hostile environment for the fungus and nematodes by feeding the biological life that eats the chitin based organisms. It is not classified as a fungicide or a nematocide even though it is known to have these properties. Used as an additive in poultry feeds it has been known to improve shell integrity due to it's concentration of calcium.
