A number of communities are enacting phosphorus-free fertilizer regulations. The reason for these regulations is that lawn fertilizer has been identified as a major source of phosphorous pollution of their water systems. Too much phosphorous in the water results in an over-abundance of algae growth in the water which lowers the oxygen levels, introduces poisonous toxins and results in fish kill and polluted water no one can swim in or drink, not even wildlife. A word about Chilean nitrate A proposed NOP rule change prohibiting Chilean nitrate as a source of nitrogen on certified organic farms is scheduled to take place in October, 2012; however, it has not yet been determined if the rule change will be implemented this year(2012). Natural No-Phos 6-0-6 can be manufactured without Chilean nitrate, upon request. Full pallets of 40 bags required for this change order. Call. Eutrophication “The enrichment of bodies of fresh water by inorganic plant nutrients (e.g. nitrate, phosphate). It may occur naturally but can also be the result of human activity (cultural eutrophication from fertilizer runoff and sewage discharge) and is particularly evident in slow-moving rivers and shallow lakes … Increased sediment deposition can eventually raise the level of the lake or river bed, allowing land plants to colonize the edges, and eventually converting the area to dry land.” - Lawrence and Jackson, 1998 |
