KELP MEAL Ascophyllum nodosum

N-P-K=1-0-2

Kelp Meal products are a natural and cost effective enhancement to any fertilization and conditioning program. It is suitable for all crops and applications, and can be mixed with most soil conditioners and fertilizers.

Works great to enhance potting soil mixes, seed and transplant beds and gives your compost a real boost! For use on agronomic crops and gardens, apply in early spring, as soon as soil can be worked.

For perennial crops, apply at the end of dormancy. Mix thoroughly with the soil or growing media, taking care not to apply in concentrated form directly on the roots.

For fruit groves, ornamental trees, lawns and turf, apply directly as a top dressing. 3 lbs./100 sq. ft. for vegetable gardens. 1 lbs/ inch of tree caliper.

Kelp doesn't usually make good fertilizer for brassicas and plants that get eaten whole like carrots because, the mineral content and potash in kelp makes for very strong, fibrous stems. Strong stems are needs for tall thin stemmed plants like wheat etc. but the stems of broccoli are best when soft.

General Application Rates

  • Gardens - 3 lbs/100 square feet or use it on your house plants. Geraniums just might like the calcium too!
  • Row crops - 1 to 2 lbs per 100 sq. ft
  • *Trees - 1 lbs per inch of caliper/tree diameter/Best sprinkled around the drip line of the tree on larger trees, or in the hole at planting.
  • Compost booster - 3 to 6 ounces per cubic foot
  • Turf - 10 lbs per 1000 sq. ft.
  • Potting mixes - 2 % of volume by weight
  • Seed Beds - 1lbs per 100 sq. ft.
  • Bedding Plants - 1 ounce per tray
  • Bulbs - 1 tablespoon mixed in soil under the bulb

*Tree sizes are measured by height and caliper. Height is used is used for deciduous trees up to 8 feet tall, and for evergreen trees. Caliper, or trunk diameter near the ground, is used for deciduous over 8 feet tall. Tree sizes increase by one-quarter or one-half inch caliper increments.

SOLUBLE KELP POWDER:

Contains the same elements as the meal but in a concentrated 100% water soluble form. Best used as a foliage feed but can also be watered in. 8 ounces of powder will make 3/4 of a gallon of liquid concentrate. Use 1 oz of concentrate per gallon of water. May be mixed with other foliage sprays.

Benefits of Kelp Powder:

  • Improved seed generation and thicker root development (mitosis).
  • Increased bloom set and increased size of flowers and fruit.
  • Increases and stabilizes chlorophyll in plants, which remits in photosynthesis, darker green leaves and increased sugar content in plants.
  • Relieves stress in plants caused by extreme weather conditions.
  • Increased micro-organisms in the soil, which can fix nitrogen from the air.
  • Increased mineral uptake from the soil and into the plant's leaves.
  • Increases the storage life of fruits and vegetables by retarding the loss of protein, chlorophyll and RNA in produce.
  • Retards the aging process in plants (senescence), keeping them producing longer.
  • Many of the trace minerals continued in kelp have important regulatory functions in plants, and in the animals and humans that consume the plants.

You'll see this product sold under copyrighted names like "MaxiCrop", "StressEx" etc.. They are all basically the same thing. Soluble Seaweed powder is the generic name for all of the soluble seaweed products you see on the market. A few may have been doctored up a little but they are all essentially the same.

5 lbs makes 12 gallons of liquid.

So 44lbs makes 105.60 Gallons of Liquid Kelp which makes this a very good value when you consider that one 55 gallon drum of Kelp costs $328.25 each and has to be shipped by truck because it weighs over 450lbs.
