Turning a Waste into a Product

Whey, a by-product of cheese making, has a high BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) that can increase the burden on waste treatment facilities and can pollute rivers, lakes, and even the ocean. Over the last decade, this by-product has been used to create valuable products such as high-protein “energy bars” infant formula, and as a film coating for food-safe packaging. By reformulating whey into a durable, natural wood finish, a potential waste product is taken out of the waste stream and put to a useful purpose.

Turning Away from Petroleum

The production of oil-based wood finishes and other coatings, such as paint, have relied solely on petroleum – a non-renewable resource. PolyWhey is derived from a renewable resource and in a small way helps to reduce dependence on oil, contributing to a more sustainable world.

These Natural Formulations use whey protein as the bonding agent. Whey is a renewable resource and a natural by-product of the dairy industry here in vermont. This use of a natural product in your professional finish translates to low VOCs – and better in-door air quality for you and a cleaner environment for everyone by using a product that used to be considered waste and was difficult and expensive to dispose of.

Quality

These superior finishes have several characteristics that make them superior to conventional water-based finishes.

Twice the Durability: PolyWhey has a cured hardness twice that of other water-based finishes, meaning it is hard-wearing even on floors that have heavy traffic.

More Coverage: Conventional water-based finishes have an average coating coverage of 300 to 400sq.ft./gallon. PolyWhey's cover is 500-600sq.ft./gallon.

Shortened Dry Time: PolyWhey is ready to recoat in two hours.

Safety

Vermont Natural Coating's commitment to producing a quality product is equal to our commitment at Dirt Works to protecting human health and environmental quality. We believe PolyWhey is the safest high-quality U.S. manufactured wood finish on the market today.

No Toxic Binder: Some conventional oil and water-based finishes contain toxic heavy metals and formaldehyde. PolyWhey’s™ binder is non-toxic whey protein.

Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Conventional water-based finishes have an average VOC level of 200g/L (grams per liter). PolyWhey has less than 180g/L, well below the strictest U.S. standard of 250g/L.

Mild Odor: Conventional water-based finishes still have a strong odor than dissipates slowly. PolyWhey has a neutral odor that dissipates quickly.
