Buying the Proper Soil for Your House Plants

Most people don't know it but good potting soil has to be made so it can drain. Quite often you see commercials on TV espousing the virtues of certain potting soils and their ability to hold water by showing the water running right through one soil and another holding all the water they pour into the pot. Neither outcome is the desired one most of the time however.

Potted plants are growing in a very unusual environment not found in most of the natural world, so you have to create the right conditions for maintaining proper moisture, light and nutrition that would otherwise be provided. Drainage is one of these very important elements you must be careful with. Too heavy a mix of potting soil and the roots can drown and fungus becomes a problem. Too much drainage and the water will run right through leaching all the nutrients out of the soil.

To assist you in this effort I've listed some varieties of potting soil and mixes you can use when potting new plants, topping off old plants and those you bring indoors for the winter months and some repotting.

One clear difference between the organic potting soils we sell is that these are organic and all natural soils. Most potting soils available at hardware stores and run of the mill garden centers are baked in an oven

Worm Castings - Fertilizer and Soil Amendment to boost tired soils and top dress Geraniums and other plants that really like a little extra calcium. Calcium deficiency is usually observed as a failure of terminal buds and apical root tips to develop. Disorders such as blossom end rot in peppers and tomatoes, blackheart in celery, internal tip burn in cabbage and cavity spot in carrots are attributed to calcium deficiency.
