Learn About The New Green Mountain Compost Facility!

Green Mountain Compost is now happily settled at the new energy efficient facility. They opened for business on July 1st and began taking in material on July 12th. More recently, they changed the name to Green Mountain Compost! Due to the big move, it had been several months since beeing able to make new compost. When those first few loads of horse manure and food scraps rolled in, the head compost-maker Norman Gordon was all smiles. There is more than that to smile about at Green Mountain Compost. The new state of the art facility will allows them to make compost faster and more efficiently than ever, which means a smaller ecological footprint and even better products.
...........
The new facility features a large building with rows of covered bays on an expansive concrete pad. Liquid runoff from the process is captured and reused in the process. Most of the bays have slotted floors that allow air to be blown up into the piles of compost. This “static aerated” system allows for oxygen to penetrate the piles more effectively than with the standard former “turned windrow” method. The result is a faster process, drier compost, and much less diesel fuel used. Yes!
With covered bays, a concrete pad, an aerated system and finer screening, this new facility makes it possible to make compost more efficiently and more effectively. This winning compost recipe hasn’t changed, but this new technology means higher quality finished products and lighter bags for shipping. We know you'll smile about that.
How is Intervale Compost made?

Intervale/Green Mountain Complete Compost is a very mature, fully composted, and odor free compost. It is an all natural product made form a diverse blend of:

  • Yard Trimmings – Leaves and grass clippings from local residents and landscapers
  • Food Scraps – From restaurants, supermarkets, cafeterias and food manufacturers
  • Nutrient-Rich Horse, Cow and Chicken Manure – from local farmers and stables
  • Compost is screened to 3/8” or 1/2"
  • No sewage sludge or chemicals are added
  • Green Mountain Compost is approved for use on organic farms

Once blended, the compost is kept under aerobic conditions where a large diversity of microbial life go to work converting waste into the rich, dark compost we know and love.

What is the pH of Intervale Compost products?

The pH of Green Mountain Compost is typically above neutral or slightly alkaline. For planting or amending soils around blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons, and other acid-loving plants, we recommend adjusting the pH of the soil over time by adding elemental sulfur or peat moss or by mulching with pine needles or pine bark mulch.

Annual soil tests are the best way to tell what your lawn or garden needs for whatever it is you’re trying to grow. Contact your local agricultural college or extension service for a soil test sample kit and more information.
What’s this white fungus-like stuff growing in my compost?

Intervale Compost/Green mountain Compost Products and soil mixes are not sterilized. These compost and compost-based mixes are full of beneficial microorganisms that play a key part in helping your plants grow. Given the right conditions, you may see white mycelium from beneficial fungi interacting with other components of the soil. This is normal and is not harmful to your plants.
