What are Nematodes Anyway!

|
|
|
Nematodes are the most numerous multicellular animals on earth. A handful of soil will contain thousands of the microscopic worms, many of them parasites of insects, plants or animals. Free-living species are abundant, including nematodes that feed on bacteria, fungi, and other nematodes, yet the vast majority of species encountered are poorly understood biologically. There are nearly 20,000 described species classified in the phylum Nemata.

Nematodes are structurally simple organisms. Adult nematodes are comprised of approximately 1,000 somatic cells, and potentially hundreds of cells associated with the reproductive system. Nematodes have been characterized as a tube within a tube ; referring to the alimentary canal which extends from the mouth on the anterior end, to the anus located near the tail. Nematodes possess digestive, nervous, excretory, and reproductive systems, but lack a discrete circulatory or respiratory system. In size they range from 0.3 mm to over 8 meters for the larger species.

Nematodes arrive on a damp sponge within a plastic bag. These strains are not highly perishable, but storage decreases their viability. If not used immediately, you can refrigerate up to one week. Do Not Freeze. To use them, the sponge is warmed to room temperature then soaked in at least one gallon of room temperature [non-chlorinated/not distilled] water for an additional half-hour. Rinse remaining nematodes from sponge. Apply using either a watering can or a sprayer. If a filter is on a sprayer, remove it before application. Do not apply in full sunlight. Nematodes are best applied during periods of cool, cloudy weather or in the evening of early spring or late summer when the danger of frost has passed.

These Fire Ant Killing Nematodes are of two species:
Called the "sal" strain. It can provide control of flea larvae and pupae in outdoor areas as well as helping to control fire ant populations.
Heterorhabditis indica, is a species of nematode newly discovered in the U.S. It has been isolated from a species of citrus root weevil. The variety in our mix is particularly suited for use in warm southern soils where fire ants are found most of the time.

Nematodes are living organisms so, we suggest you apply them in the evening of the day they arrive. If not, you can store them in the refrigerator but, you need to apply them within a few days of receiving them.
Nemapack A - C come on a small sponge you soak in water. Instructions come with them. You can apply them with a watering can or, for large areas, you can use a sprayer.
Synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides can kill them, so, just don't do that anymore okay? It's how we got in this mess in the first place!

*Shipped on Monday and Tuesday only. Some one will have to be there to sign for them, to guarantee their viability, so, choose an address where some one will be there to do that.
Special Instructions for Your Order.
- If you are unable to be home when the package is delivered you might consider placing a cooler near the front door (preferably out of direct sun) with some ice in it, with a note to the delivery person to place the package inside the cooler. If you choose to do this, please know that this will invalidate the replacement guarantee. Therefore, it is best if the you can be there when the package is delivered so they can be put in the refrigerator immediately or used right away.
- The nematodes are guaranteed to arrive alive. Replacements are only allowed providing the you signed for delivery and put them in the refrigerator upon receipt from the carrier and/or applied as directed right away.
- Open the package as soon as you get it, inspect the contents and read the instructions. If you're not going to apply them right away, put them in the fridge.
- Don't toss them in the closet and forget about them
- Don't put them in the basement thinking they'll be cool enough down there
- Don't leave them on the porch overnight or the kitchen table or any other non refrigerated space
- Do not expose them to direct sunlight or intense heat
- Do open the box and read the instructions right away
- Keep them out of the reach of children and busy hands
- Nematodes may be stored for approximately 30 days in the refrigerator if necessary but, better to order them as needed to make sure they are fresh and alive. You must check the sponge for moisture and allow air into the package every couple of days during storage.
- Nematodes may be applied with any type of sprayer and can withstand up to 300 pounds of pressure per square inch. If using a hose end sprayer it may be helpful to add some natural food coloring to the solution so you can see it in the sprayer’s receptacle. Remember to keep solution agitated as the nematodes have a tendency to settle to the bottom. Remove the filter from your pump sprayer or tank sprayer before application.
- If you don't know the application rate for the particular sprayer then calibrate it before making the application by performing the following:
Set the sprayer at mid-point. Fill the receptacle with water and add some food coloring. Turn the sprayer on and walk in rows at a steady pace. When receptacle is empty measure the area covered at that setting. This is your rate of application
- For example: With the sprayer set at mid-point and a quart size receptacle you walked an area of 1,000 square feet you would mix a one-mil package of Nematodes into two quarts of water and fill your receptacle twice to cover 2,000 square feet.
· Water the Nematodes into a thoroughly moist soil in the evenings as the nematodes are very sensitive to sunlight. Water well afterwards too.
