Much has been written and talked about this year regarding sunscreen products and it's about time as far as I'm concerned. For too long manufacturers have been hyping their products so they can sell more of them and not really explaining their purpose or proper use. Here's what I know.

Sunscreen was never intended to be used to make it possible for people to sit out in the sun for even longer periods than they did before the introduction of sunscreen to the consumer market. They were invented to give you an added measure of protection during your normal exposure to the sun. Unfortunately, they have been advertised as ways to stay out longer and suffer no consequences from doing so. This type of false advertising has lead to an increase in the incidence of different types of skin cancer since their introduction not fewer.

There are limits to what your skin can take, no matter what amount or SPF rated sunscreen you use. So, if you use sunsceen, pay attention to your exposure time. Find shade or wear a thin shirt to protect yourself if you feel or see your skin burning. Remember, when we say "sun burn" we really mean, burnt skin! It's no different than if you put your hand in a fire. A burn is a burn, be it from the sun or a stove so, cover up as necessary. Live long and prosper.
